'The Best Abstract for Counselling and Psychosocial Aspects of Infertility and Reproductive Medicine’ sponsored by Ferring Pharmaceuticals. JOINT FERTILITY SOCIETIES YORK UNIVERSITY, 15 - 18 APRIL 2007
(Deadline for abstract submission to be announced)

As last year, counsellors are invited to submit case studies for entry in this category. To help members in selecting cases for submission, the following guidance is offered, followed by a suggested template for presentation:

The case study should be between 1500 and 2,000 words in length with an oral presentation time of 15 minutes.
The account should relate to recent or current counselling work with a client or clients in an infertility setting
Care should be taken to avoid giving any identifying details of clients
Written consent to sharing of case details in this way must be obtained from the client(s)
Case Presentation Guidelines

The basic format outlined below is recommended but the bullet points under each heading are intended for guidance only. They are neither exhaustive nor all-inclusive. It is expected that use of these will be selective. Client consent however must be obtained and care taken to avoid giving any identifying details of clients.

  • Background details/description of client/s
  • Presenting issues
  • Ethical considerations/dilemmas
  • Purpose and Nature of Counselling
  • Exploration of issues presented – surrounding events and circumstances
  • Relevant theoretical framework/s and methods of practice
  • Requirements of, and provision for, counselling within HFEA Code of Practice
  • Possible focus/foci of work
  • Client expectations of counselling
  • Decisions made/contract agreed about provision of counselling
  • Process of Counselling
  • Developments/changes - for client/s, counsellor-client relationship, counsellor’s own self
    Use of supervision

    Conclusion of Counselling

    · Ending of work (for example how, when and why?)

    · Outcomes (for example what was achieved and for whom?)

    Critical Evaluation

    Use of knowledge and skills – areas of strength and areas for further development
    Use of theory to inform practice
    Impact of setting on counselling provision and/or practice (for example working within recognized limits of licensed centre, other agency, private practice) – and options for referral on
    Impact of counselling provision and/or practice on setting (for example multi-disciplinary understanding of patient/client needs and role of counselling)
    Specific learning – for self /others
